Author Interview & What's Next

Hello!

My name is Kaylin Peyerk and I am a paranormal romance author of academy based novels. My first book, High Fae Academy Year One, came out in November 2019. It's been a whirlwind of writing and promoting since then, and I've been so blessed with all of the love and feedback my book has been receiving. I haven't stopped there! I also have an academy shifter novella out, Arctic Hunter, and have just released the second book in my High Fae Academy series. I'd love to have you check out my books, and to entice you I've left the description of High Fae Academy Year One below along with some insider author interview questions!

Here is my Amazon author page link:

High Fae Academy Year One Blurb

Five incredibly hot fae males, one woman. What could go wrong?

Tiana is an elemental fae who can control all five of the Earth's elements, but all she's ever wanted is to have a normal life. Because of this, she has spent her entire existence avoiding the High Fae Academy for gifted supernaturals.

After a successful twenty-one years of avoidance, a prophecy describing the next Great War leads academy recruiter Orin to her home. He offers her a new start, an explanation, and training for her wayward power. Tiana can't help but accept when she feels a draw toward him that leaves her breathless. As she arrives at the academy it's discovered that there isn't just one steamy fae male, but five that her elements are pining for.

Will Tiana manage to harness her powers without falling for the men around her?

This book is a medium burn paranormal romance that is suited for new adult audiences.

Author Interview

What’s a typical day like for you?
I work full time during the week as an accountant so I get up around 7AM in order to get to work by 8am. After work I work out, take my dog for a walk, and then sit down to write for an hour or two.

When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?
I’ve been a reader for many many years, but I wrote my first book in my freshman year of high school. That year we read The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton in class and I found out that she wrote that in high school which inspired me to give it a try, and the rest is history.

What made you realize you wanted to write romance?
To be honest, I didn’t even know I wanted to write paranormal romance. I just found the genre this year and have read almost everything that Kindle has to offer. Then I realized I’d love to dip my toe into the world of academy paranormal romance books as they are very hot right now. It sounded intriguing and fun while also allowing me to write to a flourishing market.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment?
My greatest accomplishment has changed over the years, but I would say starting my book subscription box businesses is one that makes me the most proud. I have two that service separate niches and I love interacting with all of my fellow book lovers through this platform. It allows people who love the same genres to connect.

Do you have any hobbies?
I have two main hobbies that I do almost everyday. Of course the first is reading, and I try to read within my written genre. This is because I love paranormal romance, and it’s great to get a feel for what the readers are enjoying as well to better serve them. The second is computer games such as League of Legends or Civilization Five. These are strategy and moba games that take a lot of patience and concentration. I love that about them.

What are some of your writing goals?
I would like to finish and publish my last two novels in my three book series next year, and publish my three part novella series as well. Each supernatural species that attends the High Fae Academy will be getting their own three book novella series. I’m excited to expand the universe.

Who are your favorite book boyfriends?
I have several, I promise. Some of my favorite book boyfriends are Rhysand from A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas, Daniel from Fallen by Lauren Kate, and Ren from the Tigers Curse series by Colleen Houck.

What are three of your best writing tips?
I would say my three tips are:
Write everyday even when you don’t want to.
Save edits for later or you’ll never finish the book.
Make a good playlist to listen to while writing.

Dog or cat person?
Dog! I have two, one is a golden retriever named Walter and the other is a corgi named Gannon.

City or country?
Both as I grew up in the country but now live in the city.

Morning or night person?
Morning person!

Get things done early or procrastinate?
Both? But mostly early.

Introvert or extrovert?
I’m a writer, so introvert obviously. Lol !

Questions about the book.
You’ve just released the first book in a brand new series, High Fae Academy: Year One. Congratulations!

What do you like best about writing paranormal romance?
I would say how different and interesting romantic relationships can be in the paranormal world. There are fated mates, courting bonds, trial periods, the options are endless. It gives it a sense of excitement and mystery that you can’t get with a classic romance.

What do you like best about Tiana?
As most of my reviewers and readers have said: how badass she is. Tiana has been a fun character to write because she doesn’t take crap from anyone. It makes it easy to write hilarious scenes and dialogue.

What do you like best about Orin?
I would say how understanding he is. He’s very tuned into what Tiana needs to hear while at the academy. However, I will say that he’s not my favorite love interest in the book.

Are there other characters in your story that you’re especially fond of? Why?
I love Rowan so so much! He is a fantastic multi-layer character that has so much to offer to Tiana and the story line. Plus, I’ve been told he’s a smart alec who can’t keep his mouth shut which makes for a great read.

Were there any scenes that were particularly difficult to write? If so, how?
I would say that fight scenes are hard for me to write. It takes me a long time to figure out what I want to add and how long it should be. Plus, I’m not accustomed to writing them so it will take time and practice.

What’s up next for you?
I am currently writing the final installment of High Fae Academy which will reveal Tiana's true mate and the end of the war. I'm also working on book two and three of the Arctic Hunter series: Arctic Prey and Arctic Royal. I'm also working on outlining my next Academy Project! ;)

Spin the Dawn: Book Review

Hello,

Today we will be talking about the latest Fantasy Monthly title that was sent during July. Spin the Dawn by Elisabeth Lim is based on a Mulan retelling story. That initial description is what drew me to the book and pushed me to choose it for the month of July. Let's just say that I am not disappointed! Before I jump into my review, here is the book synopsis:

goodreads.com
"Maia Tamarin dreams of becoming the greatest tailor in the land, but as a girl, the best she can hope for is to marry well. When a royal messenger summons her ailing father, once a tailor of renown, to court, Maia poses as a boy and takes his place. She knows her life is forfeit if her secret is discovered, but she'll take that risk to achieve her dream and save her family from ruin. There's just one catch: Maia is one of twelve tailors vying for the job.

Backstabbing and lies run rampant as the tailors compete in challenges to prove their artistry and skill. Maia's task is further complicated when she draws the attention of the court magician, Edan, whose piercing eyes seem to see straight through her disguise.

And nothing could have prepared her for the final challenge: to sew three magic gowns for the emperor's reluctant bride-to-be, from the laughter of the sun, the tears of the moon, and the blood of stars. With this impossible task before her, she embarks on a journey to the far reaches of the kingdom, seeking the sun, the moon, and the stars, and finding more than she ever could have imagined."

Now for my review of the title. This book started slowly for me which is similar to my experience with We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal. Personally, when I read a fantasy book I want to be thrown right into the world that is different than our own. I want to know exactly what makes the book a fantasy rather than contemporary piece. I didn't see my first aspect of fantasy until chapter 9 where she used her magical scissors to create a shawl for the princess. So that was one con that I noticed in this book. The other con I have for this story is that the romance started much later in this book. That is another aspect i like my stories steeped with. However, I know that was not the main goal of this story so I'll let it slide.

Furthermore, the pros for this story far outweigh the cons in my opinion. After chapter 10 this book picked up in magical ways. It pulled me in and I finished the remain two hundred pages in less than two hours. The magical fantasy I was waiting for was spectacularly delivered with a weaving sweet love story that made me swoon. And the author left us on a cliff hanger that I thoroughly enjoyed and hated at the same time which is exactly how a cliff hanger should make you feel. Overall, I give this book four stars simply due to the slow start that left me feeling disappointed. But the author saved herself in the final chapters! I highly recommend this book and cannot wait to read the next Fantasy Monthly book which is A House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig. Right now, they have their September box up for sale which will feature The Girl the Sea Gave Back by Adrienne Young the author of Sky in the Deep. I'm also very excited for that one. I'll link the website below if you're interested in order from Fantasy Monthly!

Thanks for reading!

Sincerely,
